It’s one game I hope and pray will eventually get a modern remake but i’m sure it won’t. They made it super ridiculously difficult and pushed you to purchase things with real money, but, I still played it without paying for anything and loved every second of it.then they removed it from the App Store and terminated support for it. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into but I loved the game then and years later, about around 2013 or so, the game was actually released on the iOS store. I picked this game up for gba as a kid going off the artwork only. I’d say it’s one of my favorite video games of all time. Unfortunately the versions that removes these spell pauses are JP only and break the combat system because it clearly wasn’t designed around no spell pausing.Īpparently I’m in the minority here. Anytime someone casts a spell it interrupts the gameplay for several seconds to play the animation and this gets really tiresome after a while. The worst part about it is the battle speed and how any characters besides Cress and Suzu (who is optional and not available until near the end of the game) don’t feel good to play as. Likewise the story is just alright, but nothing special. Skits were added in the PSX release (and is in fact the very first Tales game to use the modern incarnations of them, albeit they’re only accessible on the map) but the party doesn’t get much chemistry going until Chester permanently joins or many good character moments until the end of the game. The game isn’t very character focused and anyone who isn’t Klaus, Arche or Chester (the latter of which is absent for 75% of the game) comes off as pretty bland. The music is also pretty good for Tales standards, especially the last arc overworld theme and Fighting of the Spirit.īut the game is dated in many ways and it shows in that it was the first Tales.
Great spritework and the tone is as classical as it gets for a SNES era RPG.
Like many here, I played the PSX version with the cless translation patch because my JP skills weren’t good enough at the time.
